Traders Protest Closure of Lahore’s Historic Tollinton Market

Lahore’s Tollinton Market, a longstanding hub for pet and bird sales, is facing closure due to a Punjab government renovation plan aimed at aligning the facility with international hygiene standards. Traders have been ordered to vacate by June 30 without an alternate location, raising concerns over their livelihoods. Many traders, who were earlier directed to upgrade their shops at their own expense, now feel the move is unjust. Some have appealed to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for intervention. The Lahore High Court has taken notice, seeking recommendations from a judicial commission. The Lahore Development Authority estimates renovation costs at Rs190 million. While model shops have been set up, officials say all vendors must comply with new standards. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized separating meat and live animal sales for health reasons, prompting the construction of a new slaughterhouse nearby.Despite improved infrastructure like tiled floors and lighting, many pet traders remain uncertain due to the lack of relocation plans. Experts have warned that placing meat markets in urban centers may worsen public hygiene and traffic issues.
